Archaeology Notes

NO64SW 78 c. 643 413.

Two seals dating from the early thirteenth century were discovered amongst debris in the abbey ruins. The first seal of brass was found about 1820, and presented to Montrose Museum in 1841. It is inscribed with the words (S. ROBERTI DE LAMBILE) and the figure of a monk. The second seal is in the RMS (NM. 29). It bears the full length figure of an abbot in pontifical vestments and carries the inscriptions (S P (F?) W. MATHI MONAC, D. ABIRBROTHOT). The original brass matrix of the seal was discovered in the late nineteenth century.
