NO53SE 1 c. 559 345
(Area: NO 559 345) On March 15th, 1878, while excavating drains in Dundee Street, Carnoustie, three stone coffins containing human remains were discovered, all within a distance of 50'. The cists were lying E-W, about 5'9" in length, and formed of rough sandstone slabs. One of the skeletons appeared to be that of a female. No relics were found within the cists.
Some weeks previously another cist had been found not far from the spot. About 23 years ago, when the foundation of a house at The Cross was being cleared, another cist was exposed. In 1810 when a sandy mound was being removed to allow for the erection of a small place of worship about 400 yds from The Cross (NO51SE 4), about 30 cists containing human reemains were found. At different times single cists have been exposed when erecting houses in the lower part of the village. In one, a gold bracelet is said to have been found.
