Archaeology Notes

NO45NE 13 4608 5531.

(NO 4608 5531) Site of (NAT) King's Palace (NR) (Tumulus) (NR)

OS 6" map, (1959)

This "tumulus", is called the King's Palace by Carnegie (information from Mr D Carnegie, Tenant and Battledykes Farm). About 600 cartloads of stone were removed and six clay urns were found here c.1833, but Carnegie is "confident" that Jervise (1853) is in error, and that the urns came from NO45NE 15.

Jamieson (Nichols 1780-90) describes the base of a tumulus , somewhat square in form, and called the "King's House", as being a little way within the second gate of the Roman camp (NO45NE 12) towards the E (see also NO45NE 22).

The site of this alleged cairn falls in regularly cultivated land and there is now no trace of it to be seen.

Name Book 1862; A Jervise 1853; J Nichols (ed.) 1780-90; Visited by OS (TRG) 6 January 1977.
