Field Visit (June 2006)
Rectangular (5.5m x 3.7m) lean-to against the back (N) side of N wall of former greenhouse. Walls are of brick at base with glass in wooden frame above. Steps go down to doors at each end. Lower wall internally re-lined with breeze block. On back wall there is a brick pillar near E end – this appears possibly hollow and may have been a boiler chimney (this could not be proved without access to the wall head). A square blocked area near W end corresponds to the door scar on the main greenhouse wall (088) and to the position of the door visible on original photographs of the greenhouse. The internal floor level has been raised (Pers.comm. Toby Loveday). It is now used as a potting shed.
This may be interpreted as the boiler house of the former greenhouse (088). It is common for a boiler house to be behind the greenhouse wall as it kept the
more functional aspects of the greenhouse away from the display area.
