Archaeology Notes

NO35NW 5 334 550.

A Celtic Bell was dug up in 1843 in Kingoldrum parish churchyard (NO 334 550). It contained, in addition to its detached tongue, a bronze chalice and an imperfect glass bowl. The bell is of the usual square form, made of sheet iron, coated with bronze, though little bronze remains. It measures 8" by 7" at the mouth, and stands 9 1/2" high, exclusive of the handle. It was donated to the National Museum of Antiquities of Scotland [NMAS] in 1851 (Accession No. KA 3). The other articles were lost.

The glass bowl, described as having upright sides like a tumbler slightly rounded at the bottom, and a low circular footstand, is listed by Curle (1932) among his objects of Roman and provincial Roman origin, and Robertson (1970) suggests a 3rd-4th century AD date for it.
