Archaeology Notes

NO33SW 11 3220 3344.

The 8' high (Statistical Account {OSA} 1793) cross in the area of Fowlis churchyard is a poor example of a market cross. Tradition states that this, and the grave-slab at its base (probably of 14th - 15th century date), mark the grave of the 2nd Lord Gray, in commemoration of whose return from the Crusades, the church is said to have been erected.

OSA 1793; A Jervise 1870.
