Archaeology Notes (October 1992)

NO24SW 46 2290 4100.

A double-ditched defended enclosure approximately 20m square was recorded as a cropmark in a field of rape west of Wester Denhead by pilots from Perth Aerodrome. The outer ditch is continuous and curved at the corners; the inner ditch-line consists of four straight ditches which form a square and do not meet at the corners.

Information from Mr M D King, Perth Museum, October 1992.

Aerial Photographic Interpretation (29 January 1993)

Aerial photography has recorded the cropmarks of an unusual double-ditched enclosure about 190m W of Wester Denhead steading. The inner ditch encloses an area about 15m square, but the sides of the enclosure do not appear to meet at the angles, strongly suggesting that it is a square barrow. The outer ditch has rounded angles. A trial trench dug across the ditches (by Professor St Joseph) recovered a piece of Roman pottery from the bottom of the outer ditch, and also revealed the line of a palisade-trench within the inner ditch. In addition to the enclosure and square barrow, the cropmarks have revealed several linear features together with some possible crescents and maculae, the latter perhaps indicating the presence of an unenclosed settlement.

Information from RCAHMS (JRS) 29 January 1993.
