Archaeology Notes

NS47SW 152 centred 43631 70194

Three large ponds situated about 311m SW of the main E gate are all that remains of the Gladston brick and tile works. The ponds are the water filled extraction area taken by the brickfield. These ponds were later utilised by the Royal Ordnance Factory for water supply.

The works are depicted as roofed on the 1st Edition of the OS 6-inch map (Renfrewshire, 1863, sheet vii), which shows a long shed with two small square buildings to the NE. On the W and NW side of the shed is an extensive area of brickfield.

The Object Name Book of the Ordnance Survey describes the works as ' Consisting of a brick and tile works for the making of, together with a brickfield'. (Name Book 1857).
