Archaeology Notes

NO17NW 2 c.13 77.

A running battle named the Battle of Cairnwell was fought at the Cairnwell pass in 1602. The main conflict took place immediately west of Meall Odhar ( NO 1577 ) on the Aberdeenshire side of the pass. Cattle thieves retreating with their booty from Glenshee defeated their pursuers until routed by the men of Braemar under McKenzie of Dalmore.
