Proposals for the development of a 70 acre site at Moss-side by Halladale Muir Ltd for industrial purposes was subject to a planning condition requiring a 7%-10% archaeological evaluation to be carried out. The evaluation revealed 2 areas which merited further investigation:
Area 1 - an extensive area of preserved wood in the low ground extending across Aberdeen/Aberdeenshire boundary. This was dated by radiocarbon sampling to the Mesolithic period.
Area 2 - an area on the high ground within the Aberdeen part of the site where some truncated features were found to survive below the plough soil. These were dated by pottery to the Early Neolithic period.
After consultation it was decided that both of these areas required excavation. The field element of which was carried out between the 7th and 22nd January 2008.
