Archaeology Notes

NO54SE 39 58389 41122

The bunker for an N series Naval decoy site Q/QF type (lighting decoy for airfield and small fire decoy) is situated 150m S of the Gora Burn and about 580m NW of Kellyfield farmsteading. The decoy site has been identified from vertical air photographs (CPE/Scot/UK 218, 3124-3126, flown 25 June 1947), the active part would appear to have lain about 1km WSW, in what is now a forestry plantation.

The bunker is depicted on the current OS 1:2500 scale digital map, which would appear to show it is now situated within earth banks. The photographs dated 1947 show that at one time it was completely covered with earth.

Designated AR 1 by the War Office it was built to cover Arbroath Airfield.

Information from RCAHMS (DE), November 2005.
