NLO: Buckie [name: NJ 415 654]
Spey Bay [name centred NJ 37 67].
Location formerly entered as NJ c. 42 65 [N57 40 W2 58].
26 August 1881, ZYPHER, 4 yrs old, not registered, wooden lugger, 18 tons, 7 crew, Master and Owner A. Slater, Porteasie, Banffshire, departed Fraserburgh for fishing, in ballast, wind ENE10, stranded, total loss, near the entrance to Cluny Harbour, Banffshire.
Source: PP Abstracts Returns of Wrecks and Casualties on Coasts of the UK [Record received incomplete].
NMRS, MS/829/69 (no. 3184).
(Classified as wooden lugger, in ballast, registration cited as BF 171, and date of loss as 26 August 1881). Zephyr: [this vessel was] wrecked near Buckie New Harbour. Capt Slater.
Registration: Portnockie. Built 1877. 18 tons register. Length: 10m.
(Location of loss cited as N57 40.50 W2 59.00).
I G Whittaker 1998.
(Location entered as NJ c. 427 660 [N57 40.8 W2 57.8]). The location assigned to this record is essentially tentative. Cluny is not noted as such on the 1996 edition of the OS 1:50,00 map, but the lifeboat shed of that name (NJ46NW 38) is at NJ 42812 65972. Buckie New Harbour is presumably to be equated with that (NJ46NW 15.00) which is also known as Cluny Harbour, and is centred at NJ 42883 66017.
This vessel most probably stranded. Her remains were presumably removed without delay from this constrained location.
The form of the name of this vessel that is cited by Whittaker is preferred over that cited in the primary account of her loss. The location of loss (near the harbour entrance) that is cited in the primary account is accepted.
Information from RCAHMS (RJCM), 1 July 2004.
