Archaeology Notes

NM32SW 7 2998 2473.

Opposite the granite quarries at Tormore is a long rocky island called Eilean-nam-Ban, the women's island, from a tradition that St Coluba banished all women from Iona and placed them in huts, the ruins of which are still pointed out on this island.

J MacCormick 1923.

Several natural hollows and undulations on the SW side of the island have possibly been mistaken for building foundations, since the only structure was located at NM 2998 2473. It is an oval foundation situated in a sheltered hollow near the shore, and measures 3.3m x 2.3m within a double-faced wall up to 0.8m wide and one course high.

The origin and date of this building is uncertain, but it is probably only the remains of a small bothy. Doubtful antiquity.

Visited by OS (DWR) 27 April 1974.
