Archaeology Notes

NJ71NE 103.04 7987 2567.

This milestone remains in situ about 60 yards SE of the junction of the lane at Rosebank, on a section of original canal remains.

A Graham 1967-8.

The canal on this map sheet is overlain for much of the route by the North of Scotland Railway opened in 1854 before the 1st edition of the OS 6-inch map (Aberdeenshire 1869, sheet lxv) was surveyed. This milestone, labelled M.S. Aberdeen 14, is on the N side of the southern section of residual canal labelled 'Aberdeen Canal remains of,' near Kirk Fold.

Information from RCAHMS (MD) 15 May 2002.

This granite milestone is situated on a tree-lined embankment that forms the NE side of a drained length of the Aberdeen to Inverurie canal. Circular in section, the milestone measures 0.34m in diameter and rises to a domed top at a height of 0.45m. A facet bearing an incised number 14 has been cut into the SW side of the top.

This part of the canal measures about 8m in width by 1m in depth, its SW side formed by a cut scarp about 5m in height, its NE side by an embankment about 4m in thickness.

Visited by RCAHMS (JRS), 1 October 2002.
