The final battle between the Scots and the Danes is said to have taken place in the vicinity of Cruden Bay in 1012 or 1014. (Abercromby nd) 'The contest is said to have extended to about four miles into the interior, on the south side of the Water of Cruden; but the hottest part of the engagement is supposed to have been on the level plain skirting the bay, still locally known as the 'Battle Fauld'.'
