Archaeology Notes

NJ92NE 1 c. 97 25.

Gold was found at the hill of South Fardin during the reign of James V, and, in 1683, there was a silver mine on the north side of the hill, 'beside the burn that runs for Tilry'.

R W Cochran-Patrick 1878.

The location of the gold and silver mines and the name 'Tilry' are no longer known locally.

Visited by OS (RL) 25 August 1970.

The exact location of these alleged gold mines has never been established; the landscape around South Farden, including the gently rising ground to the S, is one of small improved fields, none of which bear any surviving traces of mines or quarries.

Visited by RCAHMS (ATW, JRS), 27 January 1997.
