(NJ 9441 0634) Cross (NR) Site of

OS 1:500 map, Aberdeenshire, 2nd ed., (1901).

The site of the Flesh Cross, so named because the Fleshmarket was nearby. Here the towns-people were wont 'to publish royal proclamations and decrees of the council, and to perform the public acts customary on court days' (Macfarlane 1907).

Erected c.1545, the Flesh Cross was replaced by the Market Cross (NJ90NW 23) in 1686. (Fraser 1908)

(This has now been moved to another site.)

Name Book 1866; W Kennedy 1818; W Macfarlane 1907; G M Fraser 1908.

This market cross was replaced in 1686 and its site now lies in a redeveloped part of the city.
