Accessing Scotland's Past Project

A cottage in the grounds of Ballindalloch Castle has been converted from a kiln-barn dating from the late eighteenth or early nineteenth century. Once forming part of the home farm, the barn was built on a ridge to take advantage of the wind, which was used to winnow grain.

This building is a two-storeyed, rectangular structure. The kiln, which was used to dry grain, is in the southern part of the building. The rest of the building provided storage, a work-space and a threshing floor.

The kiln-barn is one of only two examples in Banff, and despite being converted for domestic use, the kiln still exists; the lower part is used as a pantry and the domed brick upper part still survives, with one of the vents glazed and converted into a window.
