Archaeology Notes

NJ54SE 3 5966 4494.

NJ 5966 4494. In a field SW of Mains of Bognie farm is a ruined dovecot measuring 5.9m by 5.5m. The south wall now stands to a height of 1.4m, but the remaining 3 walls are higher, the north wall to roof level. The interior of the dovecot is overgrown with vegetation and littered with debris. The farmer of Mains of Bognie confirmed that the ruins were those of a dovecot. No further information obtained.

Visited by OS (EGC) 2 October 1961.

The size and shape of this structure are in keeping with its being a dovecot but the rectilinear doorway and opening (apparently a window) in the north wall indicate that it has been used as a domestic structure at some period. There are no indications of nesting boxes, and an internal ledge shows that it contained an upper storey.

Visited by OS (JLD) 3 October 1961.

The ruins of a building, possibly a dovecot of late 17th-century date, stand in a field 160m ESE of the ruins of Conzie castle and 130m WSW of Mains of Bognie farmsteading. It is roughly square on plan and measures 5.9m from ENE to WSW by 5.5m transversely over walls of rubble masonry. The north gable (1.4m high) stands almost to its full height and contains an inserted high-level window, and on the ground floor, a square headed doorway. There are no traces of nesting boxes but a gable scarcement would indicate that a floor or loft could have been inserted.

Visited by RCAHMS (IMS) 9 November 1983.
