The Braes of Glenlivet has a long association with the Roman Catholic faith, as does much of Moray. In the eighteenth century, priests trained at the nearby seminary of Scalan which closed in the early-nineteenth century. However, Abbe Paul Macpherson returned to his childhood home (having retired as Rector of the Scots College at Rome) and established a church and burial-ground for the Roman Catholic community in Chapeltown, much of this work being at his own expense.
Built in 1832, Mont Abbe is a two-storeyed building, originally designed with a schoolroom on the ground floor and the schoolhouse above.
