(NJ 3024 5104) Church of Dundurcas (NAT) (In Ruins)
The remains of the church of the parish of Dundurcas which was suppressed in 1782 its lands being divided between Boharm and Rothes. Symon, Vicar of Dundurkus witnessed a charter in 1244 but otherwise nothing is known of its pre-Reformation history and the ruins are those of a much later church than 1244.
The manse stood a little west of Kirkhill and when it was removed the tenant in 1871 remembered seeing a lintel with a date which he could not precisely recall but which he was certain was at least 200 years old (Name Book 1871).
Name Book 1871; H B Mackintosh 1924.
The Church of Dundurcas (name confirmed) stands to roof height and is oriented ENE to WSW measuring 13.5m by 6.5 m within a wall 0.9m thick. There are four square-headed door-ways, one in the E gable, one in the W gable and two in the S wall. A belfry remains intact on the W gable. A lintel in the E of the two windows in the N wall is inscribed with the inverted date 1760.
The interior of the church has been used for burials and the burial ground is still in use occasionally.
No further information regarding the site of the manse.
