Archaeology Notes

HY21NW 33 c. 234 186.

There is some insubstantial evidence to suggest that an early chapel stood at Skaill, either below the present parish church, as stated by Fraser (see HY21NW 26), or close to Skaill House, according to Clouston. A plan of 1772, in the British Library, shows at 'Skail' a rectangular enclosure with an unlabelled building, with a W tower, which could be a ruined church, though Dr Lamb suggests it may be another structure comparable with the Wirk on Rousay (HY33SE 17).

J S Clouston 1918; C D Morris 1985.
