(NJ 2163 6285) Muckle Cross (NR) (Site of)

OS 25" map, (1871)

The Mercat Cross of Elgin, commonly known as the Muckle Cross, stood, until circa 1792 AD, on a site just east of St. Giles Kirk (NJ26SW 15). The structure removed at that date seems to have been erected in the reign of Charles I and consisted of a hexagonal platform or raised balcony 12 feet high, from the centre of which rose a tall shaft surmounted by the Scottish Lion. The Lion alone survived, and the present Cross, erected on the old site in 1882, is, in all other respects, a restoration.

R G Cant and I G Lindsay 1954.

The present Muckle Cross is partly housed in a hexagonal structure mounted on four steps and containing stairs around a central shaft (the shaft appears to be modern) which is surmounted by a lion as described by R G Cant and I G Lindsay (1954). Above the entrance on the west side is an inscription which states that "Ye Muckle X of Elgin" was built about 1650, and otherwise confirms Cant and Lindsay (1954).

Visited by OS (R D L) 10 December 1962.
