Archaeology Notes

NJ26SE 22 28286 62691

(Area: NJ 283 626) An almost square dovecote of round boulders bonded with clay and straw stands in the corner of the Manse garden at Urquhart.

The top of the pointed roof is open and all the woodwork rotten, the whole structure rapidly decaying.

R Douglas 1931.

The dovecot at NJ 2830 6260, generally as described, is still structurally sound. According to the minister (Rev S Forsyth, The Manse, Urquhart) the manse was built about 1825, and the dovecot appears to be of the same date.

Visited by OS (R L) 23 January 1972.
