(NJ 2026 4218) Church (NR) (site of)

OS 6"map, (1959)

The site of an early church, said to have been that of Knockando parish. No trace now remains except for an uneveness of the ground which suggests the sites of the graves, from which grave-slabs are said to have been removed.

The site lies on a small promontory among old trees and a natural ledge in sloping ground has probably been artificially levelled (Information from MS of A D S MacDonald and L R Laing).

An indication of the age of this site is provided by two Class I symbol stones and with runes, which were removed to the present churchyard (NJ14SE 1) about 1820. The neighbouring name 'Pulvrenan' (Pool Veriner on OS Maps - NJ 202 420) is probably 'Poll Bhrennainn', St Bredain's Pool (Information from MS of A D S MacDonald and L R Laing) suggestinga dedication for the church.

The railway seems to have touched the south side of the graveyard.

Name Book 1870.

No trace of the church or graveyard on a shelf which has been truncated by the railway. No further information regarding the dedication.

Visited by OS (R L) 10 March 1971.
