(NJ 1522 6993) Braemou Well (NAT)
OS 6" map, Morayshire, 2nd ed., (1906)
A holy well called the 'Brae Mou' was a specific against the Evil Eye. At Beltane (in May) and Hallowe'en (in October) the waters contained magical powers for believing worshippers.
H B Mackintosh 1914.
In Duffus parish near 'the sea is a Physick well called Brownmouth, and is frequented by many sick people who are much bettered by it, has been still a well of old but was never noticed save in James, Lord Duffus' time (almost certainly in last quarter of 17th century) and much approven of by the physicians for its excellence'.
W Macfarlane 1906-8.
This well lies within a small stone walled enclosure. It is completely overgrown and barely visible. It appears to be a natural spring which has been enclosed in stonework to form a small water filled basin.
Visited by OS (W D J) 19 September 1963.
