Archaeology Notes

NJ81NW 70 centred 8047 1631

(Location cited as NJ 8047 1631). Wester Fintray, rig and furrow.

NMRS MS/712/39.

Vertical air photography (Jasair NJ81/1488128, flown 16 May 1988) has recorded an area of rig-and-furrow cultivation (aligned NW-SE) on a moderate S-facing slope in an area of mixed woodland at an altitude of about 60m OD.

NMRS, MS/712/38.

(Also noted as GRC/AAS NJ81NW 76, formerly NJ81NW 73, at NJ 8045 1630).

NMRS, MS/712/77.

(Classification amended to Rig; Quarry-pits). Traces of rig-and-furrow are visible in a small area of ground beneath the E side of a stand of mature deciduous trees about 250m SE of Waterside farmsteading (NJ81NW 166). The rigs, which measure about 5m in breadth, are aligned N and S. Beneath the W side of the stand of trees there are several small, shallow quarry-pits, none larger than about 3m across and 0.6m in depth.

Visited by RCAHMS (JRS, RL), 10 June 2003.
