A township comprising six unroofed buildings, one of which is annotated Muness Castle (In Ruins) (HP60SW 2), one partially roofed building, twenty-two roofed buildings, twenty-one unroofed structures, some enclosures, field walls and a head-dyke is depicted on the 1st edition of the OS 6-inch map (Orkney and Shetland (Shetland) 1881, sheet viii). Twenty-one unroofed buildings, three partially roofed buildings, ten roofed buildings, some enclosures, field walls and the fragmentary remains of the head-dyke are shown on the current edition of the OS 1:10000 map (1973).
