The church of Inverugie was dedicated to St. Fergus and belonged to Arbroath Abbey (Scott et al 1915-61). Only featureless fragments of the N and S walls remain, and the former now forms part of the N wall of the churchyard, but this was probably not the case originally. The churchyard was enlarged in 1833. It went out of use when the new church (NK05SE 5) was built at St Fergus in 1616.

The remains of St Fergus's church consist of the N and S walls, about 0.8m thick, about 2.4m high and about 19.8m long, the distance between them being 5.2m.

Parts have been reconstructed and they both incorporate tombstones of the early 17th century and later.

There is no trace of the E or W gables. The graveyard is still in use.
