Mapping of cropmarking recorded on mainly oblique aerial photographs is undertaken by staff in the HES Archaeological Survey team. Oblique aerial photographs are processed in Aerial 5 software to produce a rectified TIF, associated TFW georeferencing file and a mapping control file (RDA file). Height data of at least 5m interval is used to improve accuracy, and the metrical accuracy (generally < 1m) of the rectification at the control points is documented in the RDA file. Interpretative mapping is undertaken in ArcGIS, or other GIS package, and quality assured before inclusion in the National Record of the Historic Environment.

Information from HES Archaeological Survey (K. Millican) June 2022.
