Scope and Content Tomb commemorating David Milligan and Marion Clark, Buittle Parish Church and Churchyard, Dumfries & Galloway Standing on top of this large monument is a fine marble panel showing a detailed carving of a three-masted ship riding the waves, a fitting subject for a London merchant. Throughout its history the lands of Dalskairth appear to have had many owners, including the infamous Grierson of Lag, who so assiduously persecuted the Covenanters of Galloway in the 17th century. David Milligan is recorded as having purchased the Dalskairth lands in the late 18th century but the estate was sold in 1800 following his wife's death; they appear to have had no children. This monument commemorates David Milligan, a merchant, who died in 1798, and his wife Marion Clark, who died in 1800 aged 60. The inscription reads: 'In Memory of/David Milligan Esq/of Dalskairth/Merchant in London/Died 24th Jany 1728/& his wife Marion Clark/of Culgruff who died 13th/February 1800 aged 60/While living they were greatly esteemed for/their truly religious and social virtues'.
