Scope and Content Dumbarton Castle, West Dunbartonshire, from north This view from the north, taken in about 1860 by Thomas Annan, shows Dumbarton Rock looking across the River Leven. The building in the notch between the summits is on the Duke of York's Battery, built to protect the entrance to the river. The magazine (ammunition store) is on the top of the summit on the left. The navigable channel of the River Leven is marked by the line of white-painted posts below the rock. The pier on the left is a primitive one, built of drystone rubble, and held together with timber framing. The area to the left later became the site of William Denny & Bros Ltd's shipyard. Dumbarton Rock has probably been a stronghold since ancient times. From the 5th century until 1018 it was the centre of the kingdom of Strathclyde. The present buildings on the rock, however date from the 1730s, when it was fortified to designs by Captain John Romer. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
