Scope and Content Dysart Harbour, Fife This view from the north-north-west, taken in 1975, shows the harbour from the entrance to the wet dock, with the outer breakwater piers in the distance, and in the foreground quays and jetties for loading coal. The small craft are typical of those using the harbour in 1975. In the 19th century ships were built on a slip out of sight to the left in this view. Since 1975 this harbour has become a popular haven for small pleasure craft, and the slip allows vessels to be taken out for repair or transport. Dysart was one of the first places in Scotland where coal was mined, and its harbour was probably originally formed primarily for shipping coal. It continued to ship coal in small vessels until the early 20th century. In 1831 a small wet dock was built to allow vessels to remain afloat while being loaded.
