Scope and Content Coal sidings, Ayr Harbour, Ayr, South Ayrshire This shows a coal train approaching the harbour with a diesel locomotive in charge. To the left are other trains, probably of empty wagons, with brake vans, used to control the speed of the trains, as the wagons could not be braked when the train was moving. In 1970 the harbour in Ayr was equipped with four coaling cranes and a coal hoist, all designed to handle coal in the small wagons still in use at that date, and seen here. These had a capacity of 12 tons of coal. They have since been supplanted by high-capacity hopper wagons. Ayr is a very ancient rivermouth port, and was developed for coal shipment from the late 18th century, with rail links to a pit in the hinterland. A new wet dock was built on the north side of the harbour in 1874-8, with rail sidings on an appropriate scale. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
