Scope and Content South quays, Ayr Harbour, Ayr, South Ayrshire This shows a large section of the south quays from the west, with, in the distance, the viaduct carrying the harbour branch over the River Ayr. These quays were probably designed to handle general cargo. These quays were, as can be seen, disused by 1970. To the west was a section of quay used by fishing boats, but in the 1990s the fishing fleet was transferred to Troon, and the south side of Ayr harbour is no longer used for maritime purposes. These quays were probably formed in the early 19th century, when the trade of Ayr was almost entirely sea-borne. They may have been remodelled in about 1899, when a branch railway was built to link these quays to the railway on the north bank of the river. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
