Scope and Content Ash closet from north, Scar Farm, Sanday, Orkney Islands Scar is a coastal farm on the island of Sanday which is part of the Orkney group. Sanday is low-lying and almost treeless with only a few low hills to protect it from the wind. Its fertile soils are derived from flagstones of the Old Red Sandstone age. This shows the ash closet with stone walls and the remains of a flagstone roof. It was sited some distance from the main complex of farm buildings along with the carriage house and stables which can be seen on the right. On the left there is a distant view of the local graveyard. There were six dry closets in this small building which were used as toilets before the days of running water and modern sanitation. This probably explains why it was built some distance from the house and most of the other farm buildings. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
