Scope and Content Boloquoy Steading and Mill, Sanday, Orkney Islands, from south-west This early to mid-19th-century farm complex with its meal mill and parallel byre range are significant survivors of a working farm. In 1996 when this photograph was taken, Boloquoy housed the last working, oil-powered threshing machine on Sanday. This general view of the steading from the south-west shows the farmhouse to the left with a porch extension attached, then, to the right, the farm range with the turnip house and tractor shed on the far right and the two byres between these and the farmhouse. Like much of Orkney, Sanday has good soils overlying flagstones of Old Red Sandstone age. The prevalence of flagstone, easily sliced into thin, but strong slabs, has had a big influence on local construction, not only in walls, but floors and roofs, as seen on the byre to the left of the tractor shed.
