Scope and Content Threshing machine, Boloquoy Steading and Mill, Sanday, Orkney Islands This early to mid-19th-century farm complex with its meal mill and parallel byre range are significant survivors of a working farm. In 1996 when this photograph was taken, Boloquoy housed the last working, oil-powered threshing machine on Sanday. This threshing machine inside the threshing barn at the steading was bought second-hand from Mainland Orkney and installed in the 1950s. It is thought to have been made in the 1940s by a Mr Jolley. It is powered by a single-cylinder diesel engine. The taller section was originally the kiln. After the grain milling machinery was removed in the 1890s, a roller feed threshing machine with a loading door was installed. This was used and driven by the waterwheel until the 1950s. Before 1985 this threshing machine was removed and the mill building became a general storage space. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
