Scope and Content Waterwheel, Boloquoy Steading and Mill, Sanday, Orkney Islands This early to mid-19th-century farm complex with its meal mill and parallel byre range are significant survivors of a working farm. In 1996 when this photograph was taken, Boloquoy housed the last working, oil-powered threshing machine on Sanday. This shows a detail of the waterwheel on the south wall of the mill. The low breast wheel is made of cast iron with eight spokes. It is undershot (turned by water hitting the wheel from below and making it rotate clockwise) with timber floats and is accompanied by a concrete-lined lade. The other unusual survivor at Boloquoy is the detached barn (setter) with its traditional thatched roof, the straw being tied down by lengths of rope slung over the apex and weighted down at the eaves by heavy stones known as 'bedlin stanes'.
