Scope and Content Boloquoy Steading and Mill, Sanday, Orkney Islands, from south-west This early to mid-19th-century farm complex with its meal mill and parallel byre range are significant survivors of a working farm. In 1996 when this photograph was taken, Boloquoy housed the last working, oil-powered threshing machine on Sanday. This is the mill from the south-west showing the waterwheel on the south elevation. The mill was a water-powered grain mill until the 1890s, then it was converted to a water-powered threshing mill for Boloquoy steading. This was in use until the 1950s when a fixed barn threshing machine was installed. The slightly taller unit to the left was the kiln. The threshing machine was moved because a lot of grain and straw was lost on the 300m journey from the stackyard to the mill and back to the byre. However this method was used for 50 years.
