Scope and Content Main Entrance, West Front, St Paul's Church, Newark Street, Finnart, Greenock, Inverclyde (now Finnart St Paul's Church of Scotland) St Paul's Church, Greenock, a finely detailed red sandstone church, was designed in 1893 in a late Gothic style by the architect, Sir Robert Rowand Anderson. The church was photographed shortly after it was completed in 1894 by the distinguished architectural photographer, Harry Bedford Lemere. The main entrance is by a pointed, arched doorway, flanked by traceried windows which light the vestibule. Above is a carved frieze of winged cherubs holding a banner which reads 'Come up and let us walk in the light of the Lord', a Biblical quotation from Isaiah 2.5. In 1863, Robert Rowand Anderson undertook the first of a series of church commissions which was to establish him as an ecclesiastical architect, and went on to design, in the space of three years, six Gothic churches. His work, towards the end of the 19th century, culminated in the restoration (1889-93) of Dunblane Cathedral, a Gothic cathedral dating from the 13th century. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
