Scope and Content Sugar Refinery (Warehouse), No 72 Regent Quay, Aberdeen This tall, six-storey and two attic warehouse on Regent Quay was probably built in connection with a sugar refinery on the other side of Sugarhouse Lane, which was established in 1776, and operated until 1798. This shows the warehouse from the south west. The two-storey building on the right is in front of the sugar refinery building. Latterly this warehouse was used as a grain store, and the corrugated asbestos-clad hoist tower on the left dates from that use. The sugar refinery was one of two in late-18th century Aberdeen. It was founded by a group of Aberdeen merchants. After its closure in 1798 it was used for a time as a provision preserving works by James Moir & Sons. The warehouse in this view probably passed into separate use after 1798. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
