Scope and Content Railway Station (North Berwick Station), No 10 Station Road, North Berwick, East Lothian The North Berwick branch from Drem was opened in 1850 by the North British Railway, and this little fishing village and grain-exporting port became a popular high-class residential area, golfing resort and day-trip destination. Accordingly the North British greatly extended the station probably in the 1890s. This view shows the station from the south west, with the former Edinburgh-bound platform on the right. The extensive iron-framed wood-clad awnings were provided to shelter homeward-bound excursionists. The diesel train is typical of services to North Berwick at that period. The branch was very much a 'basic railway' in 1969, served by diesel railcars, and faced an uncertain future. The buildings extant in 1969 were demolished and replaced by a much smaller structure. When the East Coast main line was electrified in 1991 the branch was too, and is now well re-established. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
