Scope and Content Gazebo on roof of Caldergrove House, Hamilton Road, Glasgow Caldergrove House, a large villa in its own grounds by the Rotten Calder river, was built c.1830. In 1875 a mansard roof and Ionic-style porch were added to give the house a more imposing façade. The interior was elaborately decorated in 1875, and again in 1919. Sadly the interior was gutted by fire in 1983. This shows the gazebo which protects the head of the spiral staircase leading to the roof terrace. The gazebo has a dome-shaped leaded roof with ornamental cast iron balustrade. It is lit by a row of windows and has a curved wooden door. The roof terrace with its gazebo was created in 1875. This area would have been used for admiring the view of the gardens and grounds. Gazebos are more commonly found in landscaped gardens, where they provide a sheltered area from which to gaze upon a fine view. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
