Scope and Content Parlour, East Wing Corridor, Craighouse Mental Asylum, Craighouse Road, Edinburgh (latterly the Royal Edinburgh Hospital and presently part of Napier University) Craighouse Mental Asylum, a huge chateau designed by the architect, Sydney Mitchell, was built in 1889-94 as new hospital premises for the Royal Edinburgh Asylum. The architectural photographer, Harry Bedford Lemere, was commissioned to photograph the interior in 1895. The parlour opens out from the east wing corridor (left) into a corner tower alcove (right). The walls have a panelled dado, and above, moulded wallpaper panels with checked corners, and a frieze with a bold pattern of trees and flowers. The chimneypiece has an overmantel with shelves for bric-a-brac. The east wing, which accommodated female patients, contained parlours and bedrooms. The planning arrangement was similar to a first-class hotel of the period rather than a hospital, with light, airy rooms and bright, cheerful colour schemes, factors that were considered therapeutic for patients.
