Scope and Content View from south, Rockland, No 150 Clyde Street East, Helensburgh, Argyll & Bute Rockland was built in 1854 to designs by Glasgow architect Alexander 'Greek' Thomson (1817-75). It is a two-storeyed, symmetrical, T-plan house in the Greek Classical style. A service wing and kitchen to the rear was converted to a separate residence in the late 20th century. This shows the house, which has an advanced bay with two windows on the ground floor and five windows on the first floor separated by pilasters. In the gable-head above is a 'sunburst' roundel under the deep eaves. The section to the right of this has seven windows at first-floor level divided by pilasters as before. To the left can be seen a modern conservatory. Alexander 'Greek' Thomson gained his nickname due to his love of the proportions and Classical style of Greek architectural forms. He used these to great effect in his many commissions, mostly in the vicinity of Glasgow itself, where he worked on churches, warehouses and mansions. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
