Scope and Content Royal High School, Regent Road, Edinburgh, from the south-east The Royal High School was designed in 1825-9 by the architect, Thomas Hamilton, on a spectacular site on the north side of Regent Road. The building was photographed in 1895 by the architectural photographer, Harry Bedford Lemere. The school was designed in a Greek Doric style. The centrepiece, with tall fluted columns, was based on the style and proportions of the Temple of Theseus in Athens. Low colonnaded wings spread out on each side to pilastered pavilions. The Royal High School, originally housed in the Old Town, was designated 'Royal' when King James VI conferred the title 'Scholia Regia Edinburgensis' on it at the end of the 16th century. The school moved to its new premises on Calton Hill in 1829. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
