Scope and Content Craigcrook Castle, Craigcrook Road, Edinburgh, from the south This photograph of Craigcrook Castle was taken in 1927 by the photographer, Harry Bedford Lemere, when the house was the property of Mr R Douglas Croall. The castle dates from the 16th century when it was built as a tower-house for an Edinburgh merchant. The south front has the original round tower at the south-west corner (left), and a turreted stair in the south-east angle. The main block, with pedimented dormer windows, was altered in the 19th century. The figure on the lawn is presumably Mr Croall. The Croall family became tenants of Craigcrook in 1875 when Mr Robert Croall leased the house. In 1891 Croall enlarged the building 'in a manner which enhanced its dignity without in the least degree detracting from its sweetness and grace'. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
