Scope and Content Signal box, Rutherglen Station, Rutherglen, Lanarkshire (Glasgow City council area) Rutherglen Station was originally simply a through station on the Glasgow-Carlisle line, but it became in 1858 the junction for a branch to a station at London Road. In 1896 it became the terminus for services on the Glasgow Central Railway. This tall signal box stood at the north end of the suburban platforms at Rutherglen, and controlled the points and signals of the complicated trackwork at this junction. It was probably built for the opening of the Glasgow Central Railway. This signal box probably continued in use until the area was resignalled with the electrification of the main line. It was unusually tall, probably to give a view over passenger trains sitting in the suburban platforms. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
