Scope and Content Mile End Mill, Anchor Thread Works, Seedhill, Paisley, Renfrewshire These mills were founded in 1812 for the manufacture of cotton thread, by the brothers James and John Clark. The sewing cotton trade expanded dramatically with the large-scale manufacture of sewing machines, and Clarks prospered. This shows the Mile End Mill from the north-west. This was built in 1899-1900 to designs by W J Morley, Bradford. Seedhill originally ran through the mill complex, and was diverted in the 1870s, as seen here. This mill survived the demolition of most of the complex from the 1970s, and awaits reuse. By the time it was built Clarks and Coats had amalgamated to form the largest sewing thread company in the world. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
